#697 5 Lessons MSPs Can Learn from Becky Teal’s Community Leadership

In the MSP channel, few names are as trusted and respected as Becky Teal. With over a decade of experience building communities first at HTG and now as Community Lead at Huntress, Becky has become a connector, a problem-solver, and a voice for the value MSPs bring to their clients and the industry. Her philosophy is simple but powerful: leave every person better than you found them.

From her recent Primecast conversation, here are five key lessons MSPs can take away from Becky’s approach to leadership and community building.

1. Give Yourself Permission to Experiment

Becky describes herself as a collector of “short-term hobbies.” She fully commits to something for three to six months, then decides whether it sticks. That same mindset applies to MSPs: not every strategy, tool, or service has to last forever. Testing new approaches without fear of failure keeps your business adaptive and innovative.

2. Value Community Over Competition

One of Becky’s biggest challenges as a community leader is convincing MSPs that they don’t need to operate in isolation. Too many believe their processes are unique or that sharing ideas will weaken their competitive edge. Becky insists the opposite is true: by learning from each other—through peer groups, webinars, or vendor-led forums—MSPs discover efficiencies, avoid pitfalls, and accelerate growth.

3. Respect the Human Side of Security

As Becky notes, vendors and SOC analysts can become numb to security alerts, but for MSPs, every incident could be business-ending. She urges empathy when communicating risks, reminding us that behind every alert is a company that has spent years building its livelihood. For MSPs, this means balancing technical precision with human understanding when helping clients navigate crises.

4. Celebrate Wins, Big and Small

MSPs are often so focused on the next milestone that they forget to acknowledge what they’ve already achieved. Becky sees this as a common blind spot: leaders don’t give themselves or their teams enough credit. Whether it’s landing a new client, retaining a long-term employee, or successfully mitigating a security threat, celebrating wins builds morale and reinforces a culture of resilience.

5. Lead with Discipline and Balance

Becky travels frequently, which requires discipline to manage her work, relationships, and personal well-being. She follows the “one more day” rule—pushing herself to stay engaged with family and community after returning from a trip before taking time to rest. For MSP leaders, this lesson translates into balancing professional demands with personal commitments. Discipline isn’t just about pushing harder; it’s about creating systems that support sustainability.

Final Thoughts

Becky Teal’s leadership shows that community isn’t just a buzzword in the MSP channel—it’s a growth strategy. By experimenting, connecting, empathizing, celebrating, and balancing, MSPs can not only strengthen their businesses but also enrich the larger ecosystem they belong to.

As Becky puts it, success isn’t always a metric on paper. Sometimes it’s simply fixing a problem for someone, making the right connection, or leaving people just a little better than you found them.
