Episode #852 of the MSPi PrimeCast
Running a successful MSP requires far more than technical expertise. Strong leadership, thoughtful decision-making, clear communication, and a willingness to keep learning all play an important role in long-term success. During his conversation with Joey Pinz, Doug Kreitzberg, Founder of SeedPod, shared lessons from his journey through software development, entrepreneurship, leadership, and cyber insurance. While every MSP’s journey is different, many of Doug’s experiences offer practical insights that business owners can apply to their own organizations.
Here are eight leadership lessons drawn directly from Doug’s conversation.
1. Leadership Begins with Self-Awareness
Doug explained that becoming a business owner quickly taught him more about himself than he expected. When something wasn’t working, he learned that the first question shouldn’t be, “Who caused the problem?” but rather, “What am I not doing?” Looking inward before looking elsewhere helped him become a stronger leader and better understand how his own actions influenced the people around him.
MSP Action: Before addressing a challenge with your team, evaluate whether your own communication, expectations, or leadership approach could be contributing to the issue.
2. Great Leaders Create a Shared Vision
Doug believes one of the biggest differences between leaders and managers is perspective. Managers help ensure work gets completed, while leaders create a vision that everyone can understand and contribute toward. Using an example from the theater, he explained that even someone with a small role performs differently when they understand the larger purpose behind the production.
MSP Action: Regularly communicate not only what your team is doing, but why their work matters to your clients and your company’s long-term goals.
3. Some of Your Greatest Lessons Will Come from Mistakes
Doug openly acknowledged that many of his most valuable lessons came from failures rather than successes. Building companies, leading teams, and growing businesses all presented situations where mistakes became opportunities to improve. Instead of trying to avoid failure altogether, he views those experiences as an important part of becoming a better leader.
MSP Action: After setbacks, spend time identifying what you learned before moving on to the next challenge.
4. Don’t Rush Into Your Next Big Decision
After selling his company, Doug said one of the biggest lessons he learned was the importance of slowing down before making another major life or business decision. Rather than immediately jumping into the next opportunity, he recommends giving yourself time to reset and reflect. His own ten-day silent meditation retreat helped him separate one chapter of his career from the next before launching SeedPod.
MSP Action: When facing major business decisions, create space to think intentionally before committing to your next move.
5. Be Intentional Instead of Reactive
Doug described intentionality as making conscious choices instead of simply reacting to whatever happens around you. Whether dealing with challenges, emotions, or business decisions, he believes leaders perform better when they pause, evaluate the situation, and decide how they want to respond rather than allowing circumstances to dictate their actions.
MSP Action: Build moments into your day to pause, evaluate situations objectively, and respond thoughtfully instead of reacting immediately.
6. Curiosity Creates New Opportunities
When Joey asked what motivates him, Doug pointed to curiosity. Throughout his career, curiosity led him from theater to software development, from insurance to entrepreneurship, and ultimately to founding SeedPod. He enjoys exploring new ideas, solving problems, and creating something that didn’t exist before.
MSP Action: Stay curious about emerging technologies, business trends, and client challenges to uncover new opportunities for your MSP.
7. Cyber Insurance Works Alongside Cybersecurity
Doug addressed two common misconceptions about cyber insurance. Some businesses believe insurance won’t cover anything, while others believe buying a policy means they no longer need strong cybersecurity. He explained that neither assumption is true. Cyber insurance helps businesses manage risk, but it works best when paired with appropriate security controls and a clear understanding of what the policy covers.
MSP Action: Help clients understand how cybersecurity and cyber insurance work together as part of an overall risk management strategy.
8. Transparency Builds Lasting Trust
Transparency was one of the strongest themes throughout Doug’s conversation. He believes businesses deserve to clearly understand pricing, policy language, coverage, and exclusions before purchasing cyber insurance. That same commitment to openness helps reduce uncertainty and strengthens relationships between businesses and the partners they rely on.
MSP Action: Make transparency part of every client relationship by clearly explaining recommendations, expectations, and potential risks.
What This Means for MSPs
Doug Kreitzberg’s career has taken him from writing software and building businesses to leading organizations and helping companies better understand cyber risk. Throughout the conversation, one theme remained consistent: successful leaders don’t simply react to challenges—they approach them with intention, curiosity, transparency, and a willingness to keep learning. For MSPs, those qualities are just as valuable as technical expertise. By combining strong leadership with clear communication and a thoughtful approach to managing risk, MSPs can build stronger businesses while becoming more trusted partners for the clients they serve.
