5 Key Insights from My Conversation with Wayne Selk That Can Elevate MSPs

In my recent podcast episode, I had the pleasure of talking with Wayne Selk, a cybersecurity expert and the Cybersecurity Programs Executive Director at CompTIA. Wayne shared invaluable insights that can significantly benefit Managed Service Providers (MSPs). Here are five key takeaways from our conversation that can help elevate your MSP business.

1. Prioritize Cybersecurity Fundamentals

Wayne emphasized the importance of focusing on cybersecurity basics before delving into more complex strategies. He highlighted the three pillars of cybersecurity: People, Process, and Technology. According to Wayne, MSPs should start by securing their people through proper training and awareness, followed by implementing robust processes, and finally, using technology to fill in the gaps.

2. Embrace Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)

One of the simplest yet most effective cybersecurity measures is multi-factor authentication (MFA). Wayne pointed out that while MFA is not foolproof, it significantly slows down potential attackers. Implementing MFA across all accounts can provide an additional layer of security, making it harder for unauthorized users to gain access.

3. Outsource When Necessary

Wayne discussed the increasing complexity of cybersecurity and recommended that MSPs consider outsourcing certain security functions to specialized Managed Security Service Providers (MSSPs). This allows MSPs to focus on their core competencies while ensuring that their clients’ security needs are adequately met by experts in the field.

4. Stay Informed and Vigilant

Staying updated with the latest cybersecurity threats and trends is crucial. Wayne advised MSPs to continuously monitor their systems and logs to detect and respond to incidents promptly. He stressed the importance of having event correlation and configuration for continuous monitoring and alerting, which can help identify potential threats early.

5. Leverage AI for Cybersecurity

Artificial Intelligence (AI) can be a double-edged sword in cybersecurity. While threat actors are using AI to craft sophisticated attacks, MSPs can leverage AI to enhance their security measures. Wayne mentioned initiatives like the AI-based incident response application being developed in partnership with the Rochester Institute of Technology. Such advancements can help MSPs respond to incidents more effectively and minimize the impact of breaches.
